Once described as the Pearl of Africa by Winston Churchill, Uganda has the potential to fulfil that description despite its relatively short and turbulent history. Uganda is a small, landlocked East African country sharing Lake Victoria with Kenya and Tanzania. The Great Rift Valley runs along its western border along with the fabled Ruwenzori, Mountains of the Moon. Uganda is green and incredibly picturesque, and Ugandans are so very friendly and welcoming. Lake Victoria, the source of the White Nile at Jinja begins its long journey northwards. Entebbe, also on the lakeshores is the country’s International Airport and Kampala, the capital city is surrounded by eleven imposing hills and is a centre of academia for this region.
Uganda has several wildlife sanctuaries, but its significant attraction is the Mountain Gorilla, located in the evocatively named Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in the southwest of the country. Bwindi, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo together form the last remaining sanctuary for the Mountain Gorilla on the planet. Bwindi and Volcanoes have habituated a number of gorilla family groups carefully protected by rangers and conservation groups for tourists to trek to observe while there are other gorilla families that move around the equatorial rain forest.
